How do I check if a website is down?

Short answer: Compare the site from another network and an independent checker. A failed check is evidence of a reachability problem from that location, not proof that the site is down for everyone.

The full answer

If the site works for a checker but not for you, the problem is your connection, browser cache or local DNS.

If several independent checks fail, confirm that your hosting is active, your domain has not expired and DNS points to the intended server. Firewalls, regional restrictions and browser cross-origin rules can also cause checks to fail.
